The origins of many wedding customs are not romantic or glamorous. The bouquet is one of those customs. While the flowers did represent femininity and possibly purity, there was a bigger reason for the bride to carry flowers. The smell. When this tradition was supposedly started bathing was not commonplace. People went weeks, even months without a proper cleaning like we partake of now on a daily basis. Also there wasn't fragrant soaps and perfumes available for the common people or peasants so they usually were not the best smelling. In our modern minds this is something that is hard to comprehend but in the middle ages well up until about only a 100 years ago brides might not have smelled pretty so they were given a bouquet of fragrant flowers to help cover the smell.
Roses, Carnations and Lily's aren't as common as they were just a few years ago. There are many brides who opt for the classic floral choices but trends are having brides moving to less traditional flowers. Succulents have seen a huge resurgence in the past couple of years and eucalyptus is the new filler once monopolized by baby's breath. The classic white rose bouquet still holds up and will for many years to come but new textures and floral varieties really do help personalize this very important bridal accessory.
